Epidemiological profile of Endoscopy of Digestive System examinations in a Tertiary Hospital in South Brazil between 2007 and 2010

Introduction: The Esophagogastroduodenoscopy made a revolution in Gastroenterology. These main indications are diagnostic and therapeutic. Methods: Cross sectional study, including high digestive endoscopies of patients Results: 51% were male with
mean age of 58,2 years old. The most prevalent symptoms were abdominal pain (54%) and vomiting (41%). The most prevalent indications were abdominal pain (34%), upper gastrointestinal bleeding (21%) and anemia to clarify (12%). It was made biopsy in 32% of the endoscopies. Discussion: The esophagogastroduodenoscopy has a good cost-effective even with a low incidence for malignancies.
